Left and centre of sheet: full-length study for the group of two male figures holding up a flag, seen to the upper right of the fresco 'The Arts of Industry as Applied to War' (1878-80, Victoria and Albert Museum). The figures are only partially seen in the finished fresco and the lower legs of the figure to the right are barely indicated. The banner is indicated. Right of sheet: full-length study for the male figure with back to viewer, holding up a banner, seen to the upper right of the fresco. The banner is also indicated. In this drawing he holds two poles attached to a single banner, whereas in the fresco he appears to hold the pole on the left side of a larger banner. Lower left of sheet: full-length study for the male figure on horseback, seen through the archway in the centre of the fresco. The figure looks down and to the left. In the finished work he looks towards the viewer and wears a larger helmet. Lower right of sheet: half-length study for the group of two male figures, with back to viewers, seated on a wall, seen to the upper right of the fresco. The poses and drapery are similar to the finished work.
