Interpretation
The artist has drawn a slanting line through the centre of the sheet in order to indicate that the two sleeves are not positioned relative to each other.
Left of sheet: study for the left sleeve of the male figure with back to viewer, being fitted with armour, to the left of the fresco 'The Arts of Industry as Applied to War' (1878-80, Victoria and Albert Museum). Part of the drapery covering the left side of the torso is also indicated. The armour which covers the shoulder area in the finished work is not indicated. Right of sheet: study for the right sleeve of the same male figure. The artist has drawn a slanting line through the centre of the sheet. Part of the drapery covering the right side of the torso, and the belt under which some drapery from the sleeve is tucked, are also indicated. The armour which covers the shoulder area in the finished work is not indicated.
Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (n+e Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (n+e Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); purchased by the Fine Art Society in 1896; collection of Leighton House Museum
