Stamped lower left "LLC" encircled, in black ink. Inscribed lower right "Andromache" in pencil. Inscribed on reverse, centre "C43" in pencil.
Left of sheet: full-length study of two standing female figures. Probably an early idea for the painting 'Captive Andromache' (1888, City Art Gallery, Manchester). Centre of sheet: full-length study of the female figure with a pitcher dressed in black and with a white head scarf, to the left of the painting. The pose is similar to the finished work although the figure is turned to the left, rather than the right. Right of sheet: full-length study for the figure with back to the viewer, in blue, to the left of the painting.
Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (n+e Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (n+e Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); purchased by the Fine Art Society in 1896; collection of Leighton House Museum
