Interpretation

This drawing was reproduced in 'The Magazine of Art' in 1893 as part of a single sheet which included a study for the head of Rizpah. The head study is also at Leighton House Museum (reference number LHO/D/0727). It seems that the two studies were cut from the original large sheet.

Description

Study of drapery falling from the right arm of Rizpah in the painting 'Rizpah' (c.1893, private collection).
