Interpretation
This study is for Leighton's design for the reverse of the Jubilee Medal of 1887. The front was designed by Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm (sculptor, 1834-1890) and it was made in celebration of Jubilee Day on 21 June, exactly 50 years since Queen Victoria was crowned.
Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (n+e Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (n+e Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); purchased by the Fine Art Society in 1896; collection of Leighton House Museum
