Inscriptions: Inscribed lower right "Study for jubilee medal" in pencil. Stamped lower left "LLC" encircled, in black ink. Inscribed on reverse, centre "469" in red biro, crossed out in black biro. Inscribed on reverse, centre "A83" encircled, in pencil.

Interpretation

This study is for Leighton's design for the reverse of the Jubilee Medal of 1887. The front was designed by Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm (sculptor, 1834-1890) and it was made in celebration of Jubilee Day on 21 June, exactly 50 years since Queen Victoria was crowned.

Full-length nude study for the female figure illustrating Industry, to the far right of the reverse of the 'Jubilee Medal' (1887, Royal Collection).

Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (n+e Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (n+e Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); purchased by the Fine Art Society in 1896; collection of Leighton House Museum
