Interpretation
Leighton may have made these studies at London Zoo. Although three of the four studies on this sheet are for a lion in the painting, all appear to have been made from a tiger.
Upper left of sheet: half-length study for the head shoulders and legs of the lion in the centre of the painting 'The Syracusan Bride' (1865-66, private collection). Upper right of sheet: half-length study for the head shoulders and legs of the tiger, just right of centre, in the painting. The right half of the face is drawn in more detail. Lower left of sheet: study for the hindquarters of the lion in the centre of the painting. Centre right of sheet: study for the tail of the lion in the centre of the painting. The tail appears to be striped and may be drawn from a tiger.
