Interpretation

This drawing corresponds to yellow drapery which falls from a basket of flowers carried by a girl. Leighton retained his fascination with the stylistic effects of drapery throughout his career and often made extensive studies of fabric when preparing to paint a composition.

Description

Drapery study for the female child wearing a gold and red dress on the far left hand side of the painting 'Cimabue's Celebrated Madonna...' (c.1853-55, Royal Collection).
