Stamped lower left "LLC" encircled, in black ink. Inscribed lower right "[illegible]" inscription has been erased. Inscribed on reverse, centre "132" encircled, in pencil.
Left of sheet: study for the composition of the painting 'Salom+ Dancing' (c.1864, private collection). Figures seem to be indicated to the right of Salom+, although these are not included in the finished work. Centre of sheet: half-length nude study for the figure of Salom+. Right of sheet: study for the left and right hand of Salom+. The gesture of each hand is similar to the those in the paintings. However, the left hand is drawn above the right, whereas in the painting, the right hand is held higher.
Bequeathed by the artist to his sisters, Mrs. Augusta Matthews (n+e Augusta Neunburg Leighton, 1835-1919) and Mrs. Alexandra Orr (n+e Alexandra Leighton, 1828-1903); purchased by the Fine Art Society in 1896; sold by the Fine Art Society for 12:12:0; collection of Leighton House Museum
