Albert Bridge is closed to vehicles as a precautionary measure following routine inspections carried out by our highways engineers and contractors.
The Council has taken the responsible decision to close the bridge to vehicles following planned maintenance checks to allow for engineers to analyse the findings and identify appropriate actions.
The bridge remains open to pedestrians, and traffic diversions are in place via Chelsea Bridge and Battersea Bridge.
Cllr Johnny Thalassites, lead member for environment and planning, said:
Albert Bridge is a much-loved historic structure, but at more than 150 years old it requires constant care and attention.
The safety of the bridge’s users is our absolute priority, so we have taken the precautionary step of closing the bridge to vehicles to allow our expert teams to carry out further investigations.
Thank you to motorists for their patience and we are working at pace to reopen the bridge as soon as it is safe to do so.
Albert Bridge, which first opened in 1873, is more than 150 years old and is an English Heritage Grade II* listed structure. It is one of only two bridges in London to never have been replaced – the other being Tower Bridge.
A three tonne weight restriction has been enforced since January 2024 to protect the bridge.
