People can now apply for a share of £2.3m to fund projects in their neighbourhood in Kensington and Chelsea. Residents and residents’ associations, local community groups, registered charities, infrastructure providers and community interest companies are all invited to bid for the money to spend on things that matter to the local area.
The fund – known as the Neighbourhood Community Infrastructure Levy - comes from contributions made by developers when they build in local neighbourhoods. The first wave of funding, released in 2020, has seen projects awarded including:
- High Street Kensington Christmas Lights
- Acoustic cameras to catch and crackdown on noisy drivers
- Showcasing the history of Caribbean culture in Notting Hill
- Re-training, up-skilling and back to work schemes for residents
- Education and social events for young people on the World’s End Estate through the Another Way Chelsea Youth Club.
Lead Member for Planning, Place Environment, Cllr Johnny Thalassites has said:
“The people living in our communities are the ones who know how this funding could have the biggest and best impact. That’s why we ask them to come forward with projects the neighbourhood will value most.
“Projects funded in the first round are already making a difference. The acoustic cameras have already helped our team send warnings or penalty notices to more than 250 nuisance drivers.”
A previous consultation determined areas of priority for the fund. All projects must relate to improving air quality, policing resources and emergency services, parks and open spaces, streetscape or community safety. Applications will be assessed by officers and local councillors will make final decisions on money awarded to projects in their ward.
