Rubbish and recycling in Kensington and Chelsea this Christmas

Published: Monday 12 December 2022

Residents can expect their rubbish to be collected over the festive period, but no household waste collections will be happening on bank holidays on Monday 26 and Tuesday 27 December or on Monday 2 January. If your rubbish would normally be collected on these days, please wait for your next collection to put your rubbish out.

You can help our crews and the environment by presenting rubbish on the right day for collection, making sure bags are not overfilled and keeping clean recycling away from food waste. Watch this video with crew member John Toff for some helpful tips.

Here’s what to do with some of the things you’ll be throwing out this Christmas.

Recycle these things:

  • Christmas cards and envelopes if they are not glittery
  • Wrapping paper if it’s not metallic
  • Cranberry sauce jars and bucks fizz bottles – any glass jars and bottles and the metal lids can go in loose with your recycling.
  • Quality street tubs, gravy pots and veggie trays – all plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays
  • Clean, empty food and drink cartons (remember to wash and squash and put plastic lids back on)
  • Cans and tins
  • If you have extra cardboard from toys and packages flatten it and place it beside your recycling bag or bin

There are a few things we cannot recycle, so put these in your rubbish:

  • Glittery cards
  • Foil based wrapping paper
  • Tin foil
  • Shiny gift bags or any gifts bags made with anything other than paper or card
  • Soft plastics such as cling film, sweet wrappers and crisp packets
  • Food waste unless you have a separate food waste collection

During December, many of us make more waste than usual, from excess food to unwanted gifts. According to Wildlife and Countryside Link around 114,000 tonnes of plastic packaging is thrown away and not recycled over Christmas. The environment agency has come up with 24 handy tips to cut down on waste this Christmas.
