Jacuzzis and spas

Spa pools are becoming increasingly popular within the UK and are now in regular use in sports complexes, health clubs, hotels and private residences.

However the relatively small volume of water in relation to the number of bathers, combined with the warm temperatures of the water makes considerable demands upon the disinfection and filtration of the workings of spa pools. Consequently if they are not maintained correctly, spa pools can become the source of infection rather than pleasure.

The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea works with the Health Protection Agency to ensure your safety.

Legislation

Visit the Health and Safety Executive page Control of Legionella: Revised Code of Practice.

Ensure your client's safety

  • follow manufacturers cleaning and disinfection processes
  • managers should have working knowledge of the spa and its operation - staff must be fully trained in cleaning and disinfection procedures
  • accurate and up to date record keeping as well as regular sampling of your pool water are essential

Visiting a spa

  • make sure your surroundings are clean and hygienic
  • ensure customer hygiene and safety advice is freely available and that usage rules are visible at entrance of the pool or nearby
  • staff should be on hand to answer your queries
  • the water should be clear and no scum should be visible
  • the temperature of the water, the cleaning process and chlorination should be monitored
  • the spa should not be overcrowded

The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea carried out an ongoing inspection programme of swimming pools, spa pools and water features in the borough to ensure your safety. For spa pool queries contact the Royal Borough's Health and Safety Team.
