Thurloe Place

Thurloe Place is near South Kensington tube. This small, peaceful garden contains the Yalta Memorial which remembers those people forcibly repatriated by the Allies to Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union after World War 2. Many did not survive the journey home and those that did faced starvation and disease.

History of Thurloe Place

This square, named after John Thurloe, was begun in 1840 by G. Basevi, announced a new era in Italianate town house design. It is said that Oliver Cromwell presented the land in Brompton for services rendered during the Commonwealth.
