Being active is all about having fun. If we don’t enjoy it, we won’t keep it up. The name of the game is to try to get your heart beating faster and your lungs working a bit harder for at least 10 minutes at a time.

However you like to move there will be somewhere in and around Golborne where you can do it.

There are a host of world class sports and leisure facilities on offer across the area. There is so much happening that below are just some highlights of the range of activities provided by local centres.

Kensington Leisure Centre – Swimming and lots more

The state of the art swimming pool runs family swim sessions every day. Female-only swimming sessions take place on Wednesday and Sunday evenings. The centre has a leisure pool for parent and child sessions with jet cannons and a mushroom fountain. You can find out about the centre's facilities on their website.

Swimming costs £1.70 per child and £4.50 per adult. Over summer, during certain times, children can swim for £1 during Kids for a Quid sessions. Free swimming is also available to all children registered on the Kensington Better Swim School. Other activities at Kensington Leisure Centre include badminton, squash, tennis, junior gym and table tennis.

Family Leisure Pass
Did you know that families on a low income can apply for a Family Leisure Pass that offers discounts on leisure activities across the borough? Parents who have a permanent address in the borough and are either fulltime students, in receipt of income benefits or are registered disabled are eligible to apply.

An annual pass costs £14 and up to two children aged up to 16 can be included. Families with a leisure pass can enjoy free
swimming, half-price tennis courts and cricket nets in borough parks and halfprice gym sessions and racquet sports at Kensington Leisure Centre. Visit the reception at Kensington Leisure Centre to find out more and make an application.

Epic Sport

Epic provides a wide range of weekly sports sessions, with an extensive range of community sports opportunities for young people aged eight to 19, or up to 25 with a learning difficulty and/or disability.

Sports include badminton, trampolining, swimming, diving, climbing and basketball. Most of the sports sessions are on a turn up and play no booking necessary basis. Many of the sessions are free, and others have a small fee of between £2 and £4.

Golborne Youth Centre is free for young people aged 10 to 19, or up to 25 with a lifelong learning difficult and/or disability. They run lots of fun activities, such as gym sessions, table tennis, street dance and a Nintendo Wii challenge.

CanoeCanalside Youth Club runs adventurous outdoor sporting activities for young people aged nine to 19 within central London, including on-site kayaking, canoeing, climbing and weightlifting activities. Youth club sessions run on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 4.30pm and 7.30pm, and on Saturdays between 11am and 1pm and between 2pm and 4pm, where young people can try a range of activities. There are lots of sporty activities on offer at Dalgarno Trust. On a Monday between 4pm and 6pm there is free football coaching led by Wayne, a local Community Champion, and a yoga class between 6.30pm and 7.30pm (£3,
all welcome).

Head over to the Dalgarno youth project on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Friday for lots of healthy fun including free football coaching with Queens Park Rangers FC and London Sports Trust, a gym with weights and cardio machines, table tennis, boxing, street dance, healthy cooking and lots more!

Sessions for eight to 12 year olds take place between 4pm and 6pm and over 13’s between 6.30pm and 9pm. Admission is free.

Alongside the adventure playground there are lots of other activities going on at the Venture Centre to help keep children active.

Catalyst Gateway runs a Table Tennis Club for under 16s at the centre every Saturday between 11am and 2pm with highly skilled coaches conducting fun and interactive sessions. To find out more call 07860 917094.

There are lots of sports for families and young people to enjoy at Westway Sports & Fitness with a wide range of leisure services including one of the tallest climbing walls in the UK, eight football pitches, ten tennis courts, cricket nets, fives courts, wallball, martial arts and outdoor sports such as basketball and netball.

The cost of activities varies – there is free football for 14 to 17 year olds on Monday evenings with FA qualified coaches and free practice basketball hoops. Junior Climbing costs from £6.25 and tennis from £4.50.

Westway Sports & Fitness, which is part of Westway Trust, also runs afterschool and school holiday sports programmes for children aged between five and 17 that offer a wide range of fun and healthy activities – call to find out

Sports facilities in your local parks

Tree and sunMulti Use Games Areas (MUGAS)
There are lots of MUGAS in and around Golborne including Emslie Hornimans Pleasance, Avondale Park and the Hazelwood games pitch. They can be booked for group activities and are also free at certain times to use for kickabouts and general fun on a first-come-first-served basis. Tennis and cricket
Once the sun starts shining it’s time to dust off the tennis rackets and cricket bats. There are tennis courts at Emslie Hornimans Pleasance, Avondale and Kensington Memorial Parks. The sports booking line can advise about times when certain courts can be used for free. ‘Hiring a court for an hour costs from £7.40, £3.70 for children. Rackets can be hired for £4.10 for adults, £1.40 for children.

Cricket nets at Kensington Memorial Park can be booked from £2 per hour. Tennis lessons and coaching is also available. Call the sports booking line on 020 7602 2226 for more information.

Exercise classes at Little Wormwood Scrubs ParkHeart
Every Thursday between 10.30am and 11.30am a qualified instructor leads a free exercise class at Little Wormwood Scrubs park – the class is suitable for everyone (including parents with little ones in a pushchair).

Skateboarding- Meanwhile Gardens skate park
Set within Meanwhile Gardens (opposite 29 Elkstone Road, W10 5NT) is one of London’s oldest skate parks with varying size interlocking bowls, pump bumps, hips, extensions and more (skateboarding speak!).

It is free to use all day every day.

This huge undercover skatepark is a paradise for skaters as it has everything a beginner or pro skater could want. Basic membership is free and there is a subsidised after-school club for under 16s between 4pm and 6pm between Monday and Friday that costs £2 per session. Weekend sessions cost from £4. Skateboards and helmets are available to
hire for a small fee.
