Golborne volunteers champion the Sugar Smart cause

The Golborne Community Champions have thrown themselves behind the Sugar Smart Golborne campaign and delivered lots of engaging activities to help raise awareness of the dangers of excess sugar in our diets and promote healthy eating. The Community Champions are local residents who work on a voluntary basis to promote the health and well-being of their local community.

Several activities have taken place with children at the Notting Hill Adventure Playground including novel games to teach children about tooth brushing and good oral health. During the May half term a performance artist called Mr Danger visited and kept over 70 children entertained with a workshop that included various silly stunts on a Sugar Smart theme. This included an attempt to create the world’s longest toothbrush and lift a bag containing the average amount of sugar a child eats in a year!

The Champions also caused a stir on Golborne Road market on Friday 19th May when they ran a health promotion stall to share the Sugar Smart message and help raise awareness of the Healthy Start scheme amongst local families. They chatted to local parents to let them know that the vouchers are now accepted by most traders selling fruit and vegetables on Golborne and Portobello Road market. Lucky passers buy were offered taster pots of vegetable curry that had been cooked up by the Champions using fresh ingredients from the market, in addition to a variety of information resources and recipe cards. Mytime Active were also on hand to talk to local residents about healthy eating tips and raise awareness of the free healthy lifestyle services they provide for local children and families.

Michelle Poponne, Community Champions Manager said ‘We know that too much sugar and poor oral health is a big issue for local children and something we are committed to help address. We are proud to support the Sugar Smart Golborne campaign and we will continue trying new and creative ways to capture children’s imaginations and get healthy eating messages across to local residents’
