Time to get Sugar Smart!

23 February saw the launch of Sugar Smart Golborne – a new campaign being delivered as part of Go Golborne that aims to make it easier for children and families in the Golborne and North Kensington area to access healthy food and drink and make ‘Sugar Smart’ choices.

Children across the UK are eating three times more sugar than the maximum daily limit recommended by health experts. The biggest source of sugar in children’s diets is sugary drinks, followed by sugary snacks.

Over the next six months organisations and businesses across the Golborne area will be clubbing together to help raise awareness of the dangers of excess sugar and to reduce the availability of high sugar products in public places. Schools will be organising Sugar Smart days, café’s will be reducing sugar in recipes, and shops will be promoting water by displaying special ‘Love Water, Be Sugar Smart’ fridge stickers and increasing the stock of low sugar snacks.

Welcoming the campaign Dr Mike Robinson, Director of Public Health said ‘Children are eating too much sugar and we know this leads to problems including tooth decay, diabetes and obesity. Organisations supporting the Sugar Smart Golborne campaign are taking important steps to help set children up for a brighter and healthier future’.
