Golborne kids spread the Sugar Smart message 

During the Easter holidays 32 children and their parents took part in a Sugar Smart fun day organised by Al Hasaniya Moroccan Women’s Centre to support the Go Golborne Sugar Smart campaign. During the day children took part in lots of activities to learn about the importance of keeping to the recommended daily amount of sugar and ideas for tasty low-sugar snacks and recipes.

The highlight of the day was when the children led a Sugar Smart march along Golborne Road wearing special Sugar Smart T-shirts to hand out leaflets and healthy snack bags to local residents and talk to them about the campaign. The children made a real splash and people were very receptive to the sugar reduction messages the mini campaigners were sharing.

After their hard work pounding the streets the children enjoyed a meal together of vegetable cous-cous and made their own fruit kebabs for dessert. They received certificates to reward them for their hard work and many are now eager to get involved in more campaigns. To summarise the event Zohra Davis, Al Hasaniya project co-ordinator said ‘Encouraging children to do some campaigning proved to be a brilliant way to get the Sugar Smart message heard loud and clear across the community. They got such a buzz from the day and both the children and their parents went home full of enthusiasm and new ideas to help put the messages into practice at home’
