The Curve Community Centre

The Curve Community Centre, Bard Road, aims to provide a safe, friendly space where families and individuals from across the community can access the services they need to help them move forwards. The Curve was established as part of the response to the Grenfell Tower tragedy. We are interested in hearing your views about its future.

The story so far
The Curve was initially set up in July 2017 as an emergency rest centre for people who were most affected by the Grenfell tragedy. The way the centre operates has evolved from this original purpose and is now open to the local community, focusing on residents in Notting Dale. As the needs of the community have changed over the past two years, the centre has developed and continues to do so to meet the evolving needs of the community.

Today the centre is open seven-days a week, offering a wide range of community and specialist services. The community services range from employment, training and IT support, to ESOL, crèche, and tuition. Many external local providers also run services in the centre covering anything from cooking classes to empowerment sessions for young boys. Specialist health and wellbeing services, including NHS Grenfell health and well-being services, health checks, and alternative therapies, are complemented by yoga, Zumba and gym activities to support the community’s health and wellbeing. With a programme of activities covering over 70 hours a week, the centre also runs a number of large social events, celebrating the cultural diversity of the community and bringing people together.

While the centre sees over 1000 visitors each week, we are mindful that not everyone in the community uses the centre and that some people may not feel comfortable accessing services at The Curve. Additionally, we recognise that to best support people to recover from a tragedy, sometimes services need to change or end to support people along their journey.

Having your say
We’d like to hear your views about The Curve and for you to help us decide on the future of the centre. This is an important consultation which could result in the closure of The Curve, and you are asked to consider each question carefully.

It's important that the community has a say about what services are provided and how the Council uses the money it has committed to help support the community's recovery. From April 2019, the Council has committed around £5m a year to support this, focusing mainly on residents of Notting Dale ward, with separate funding set aside to support the bereaved and survivors. The Curve is paid for out of this £5m. Currently, the Council spends £1.5m per year on The Curve. This covers staffing and events, and activities seven days a week, renting the building and other running costs associated with the building. As the Council does not own the building, around half of The Curve’s budget is spent on renting and running the building.

Once the consultation period has ended in the autumn, your feedback will be collated and will be made available for you to see. The Council will consider all of the feedback and will use this to make a decision as to the future of the centre.

Please note for your feedback to be considered you must provide your name and address within the questionnaire. This is to ensure responses are from the local area. Your personal details will be handled in the strictest confidence.

Looking ahead

The Council must ensure that the services it provides are meeting local needs and are value for money.  Currently The Curve costs £1.5m each year. This covers staffing, events and activities, seven days a week, along with renting and running the building. As the Council does not own the building, around half of the budget is spent on renting and running the building. These funds are committed to providing services for the community in Notting Dale Ward, and will continue to be invested in the community over the five-year Grenfell Recovery Strategy period.

We want to understand if you support the current level of investment in The Curve. Please indicate which of the following statements you agree with.
