Silchester Arches
Silchester Arches is one of the sites included in Phase 2 of the Council’s New Homes Programme and will provide 11 Council-built homes for social rent including one ground floor wheelchair accessible home.
This six-storey building incorporates environmentally-friendly features such as double-glazed windows to retain the heat and air-source heating systems which use no gas and a small amount of electricity. These features also mean the homes are cheaper for the residents to live in.
Winter gardens
Each of the homes will have a winter garden which will ensure that noise from the surrounding area is limited.
The construction of the development by Buxton Building Contractor began in early 2023 and is due to be completed by September 2025.
Construction hits half-way mark
Cllr Sof McVeigh, Lead Member for New Homes visited the Silchester Arches site in March 2024 to take a look at how the development is progressing. Hear what she has to say about the scheme.

(00:00) Hi, I'm Councillor Sof McVeigh, and I'm here in front of Silchester Arches and as you can see, we're halfway through, and hope it's going to be done by the end of 2024 and we're building 11 new Council homes here they're all going to be complete social rent, so we're really excited about that, and the ground floor flat is completely wheelchair accessible.
(00:33) As with all our new builds we're really mindful of keeping the cost down for residents so they're going to be thermal efficient windows and doors, air source heat pumps, and also something we're trying to do in some of our new properties is having winter gardens which are like enclosed outdoor balconies, so you can have that indoor outdoor aspect and again it's been quite challenging because it's quite a small site, and you can see it's right by the TFL tube line and it's got a beautiful old plane tree here and so it's been really challenging for the construction, Buxton, but they're doing a great job and hopefully be all done by the end of 2024.
