Join the library

Join for free

It’s free to join and borrow books.

You can join online or in person at any of our libraries for free.  All you need is proof of your permanent address. This can be a UK address or an international address.

Library charges

For more information about our library charges visit Borrowing, loans and fines.

Join online

You can join online to access our wide range of ebooks, e-audiobooks, e-magazines, e-newspapers and language courses. You will  be registered as a temporary member.

Next step is to provide official proof of your name and address in-person at any of our libraries. We will change your temporary library membership to a permanent one and you can start borrowing items from our libraries.

Join the library

If you have difficulties with the Join the library form, you can also use our alternative registration form.

Join in-person

You can complete an online membership form while visiting any of our libraries and provide official proof of your name and address, such as:

  • driving licence
  • bank or credit card statement
  • utility bill
  • tenancy agreement

Library staff are able to help you complete the form. If you are unsure about what documents to bring, ask a member of library staff or email us.

All applications for a library membership for children and young people under the age of 18 require the consent of a parent or guardian.
