Apply for a Sex Establishment Licence

About the sex establishment licence

You must apply for a sex establishment licence if you want to open a: 

  • sex shop
  • sex cinema
  • sex encounter establishment
  • sexual entertainment venue

There are four different sex establishment licences that you can apply for. These are: 

  • grant of a new sex establishment licence
  • renewal of an existing sex establishment licence 
  • transfer of an existing sex establishment licence
  • variation of an existing sex establishment licence

Before you apply

You should read the guidance notes before making the application.

As part of your application, you will need to provide the following

  • the sex establishment licence application form that is relevant to you
  • premises plan (new grant and variation applications involving a change to the licensed area)
  • evidence of planning permission (new grant and variation applications involving extended hours or increasing the licensed area)
  • copy of the lease/tenancy agreement (new grant and transfer applications)
  • copy of the site notice
  • licence fees

You can scan documents if you do not have electronic copies. You must make sure the information is readable.

You can apply and pay online or by post. You must include all supporting information.

How much it costs


Grant of a new sex establishment licence

The cost of a new sex establishment licence is in two parts.

Part A costs £4,196 and covers the cost of the application. You must pay this when you apply.

Part B costs £1,249 and covers any extra costs of granting the licence. You must pay this if we grant the licence.

Renewal of an existing sex establishment licence

The cost of a renewal of an existing sex establishment licence is in two parts.

Part A costs £309 and covers the cost of the application. You must pay this when you apply.

Part B costs £1,249 and covers any extra costs of granting the licence. You must pay this if we grant the licence.

Transfer of an existing sex establishment licence

The cost of a transfer of an existing sex establishment licence is £802.

Variation of an existing sex establishment licence

The cost of a variation of an existing sex establishment licence if the licence is mid-term is £1,632.

The cost of a variation of an existing sex establishment licence if the licence is being renewed is £1,445.
 

After you have applied for a sex establishment licence

You must display a notice at the premises for 21 days after you made your application. You also need to publish a copy of the notice in a local newspaper within 7 days of the application. This must circulate within the Kensington and Chelsea area.

There is a consultation period of 28 days. We will contact you either during or after this time to let you know what the next steps are. 

If you are applying to renew your licence

If you apply and pay before your current licence expires, you can continue to operate while you wait for the licence to be renewed.
