What listed buildings are
Listed buidlings are buildings which are historically or architecturally important.
There are around 3,800 listed buildings in the borough.
The lists are drawn up by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport.
When listed building consent is required
Listed building consent is required for most alterations to a listed building whether they are outside, inside or affect a curtilage building.

Penalties for unauthorised works
If you carry out unauthorised works to any part of a listed building, you may be prosecuted.
You could be imprisoned for up to 6 months and/or fined up to £20,000.
This is in addition to the liability for legal costs and the cost of removing the offensive works.

Buildings are classified to show their relative importance:
- Grade I
- Grade II*
- Grade II
