Trees and Development Supplementary Planning Document

Trees are an invaluable asset both visually and environmentally. They provide greenery and shade, support biodiversity and improve air quality. It is therefore vital that they are protected on or near development sites. This Trees and Development SPD has been produced to update and replace the existing Trees and Development SPD which was adopted in 2010.

The SPD sets out the Council’s requirements in relation to any proposed development with trees on or near the site. It includes guidance/recommendations on how to consider existing trees at the design stage and successfully incorporate them into a development. It also provides guidance on new tree planting. The SPD is capable of being a material consideration in determining planning applications.

The draft SPD was published for consultation for eight-weeks, from 14 November 2022 to 9 January 2023. The consultation document can be found on the Planning Policy consultations page.

The SPD was adopted by the Council on the 14 June 2023. The SPD, together with all other supporting documents, are available to download below.
