Golborne shops get Food Smart!

Local businesses help sell the healthy eating message

Three local shops are supporting the Council’s Go Golborne healthy lifestyle project by trialling a new scheme to make it easier for customers to make healthy choices.

The three shops – Costcutter and Maharaja on Golborne Road, and AK Foods on Portobello Road – have introduced an in-store promotion linked to Change4Life’s Be Food Smart healthy eating campaign. Shoppers will find that the stores have introduced new product lines such as rice cakes, lower fat cheese, and healthy snack bars. Be Food Smart promotional materials in the stores highlight food and drink products that are low in sugar, salt and fat across the stores. Customers can also pick up free recipe cards with ideas for healthy meals and snacks that can be made with ingredients available in-store.

A company called Rice Retail Marketing is supporting the stores to introduce the changes. The next steps are to introduce defined healthy snack ranges at the till points and run stalls and activities across the Golborne area to make sure the local community know about the Be Food Smart message and how their local shops can help them put it into practice!

Welcoming the scheme Dr Mike Robinson, Director of Public Health said: "Go Golborne set out to mobilise the whole community in actions to make it easier for local children and families to access and enjoy a healthy lifestyle. Convenience stores are at the heart of their local communities and this is a fantastic example of how they can play a valuable role in nudging people towards healthier choices."
