Image formats

File names for images

Acceptable web ready image formats are jpegs, GIFs, PNGs, at 72 DPI (dots per inch).

Give image files meaningful names; avoid jargon files names for example ‘img123.jpg’.

This allows fast download whilst keeping image size to a minimum for the web.

Alt text

Provide a short clear, contextual and meaningful description of the image. This is a very user friendly format for people who are screen readers and will make the content accessible.

If an image is not essential to understanding the content, use empty quote marks: "" as the alt text. For example, a decorative image, this may include logo image.
