Accessible home hand-back scheme

What is an accessible home?

An accessible home is designed to meet the needs of people who have:

  • disabilities
  • mobility issues
  • other health requirements

The need for accessible homes

The number of people who need an accessible home is far greater than the number of accessible homes available. This is partly because there is a national housing shortage, but also because some households that live in accessible properties do not have disabilities or mobility problems. These homes would be suitable for households who desperately need to be in accessible homes.

The scheme ensures accessible council and housing association homes in the borough are occupied by the households that need them. It supports people who:

  • live in accessible properties they no longer need
  • want to find a new home that better meets their needs

For example, someone who has an accessible home for which they do not have a medical need.

Who can apply?

Any tenant of a property with:

  • no steps either inside or outside, and at least one bedroom. Studio flats cannot be accepted
