Change of personal details, address or vehicle

When to notify us

Notify us online or by post if you:

  • change your personal details such as name, email or telephone number 
  • move home
  • change your vehicle, either permanently or temporarily
  • have a new number plate

You can specify the start and end dates of the change when you complete the form. The information below explains what documents you will need to submit to us for the application to be processed successfully.

We charge £12 administration fee for changing your vehicle details. We do not charge for changing your personal details or address. 

Submit change in circumstance  

You need your Permit ID and Personal Identification Number (PIN):

  • your Permit ID will follow this format: RES12345678 or PP-1234.
  • your Access PIN is made up of 16 character: XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX.

If you have forgotten your details or misplaced our correspondence, request that these details are sent to your email address.

Permanent change of vehicle

You need to provide:

  • a completed change of vehicle details form 
  • proof that you own or use the new vehicle

You also need to provide one of the following documents:

  • sales invoice and insurance
  • new keeper supplement and insurance
  • personalised vehicle registration (V750) and insurance
  • number plate authorisation certificate (V948) and insurance

If the emissions rating of your new vehicle is different from your current one, we will charge you for the additional amount or refund the difference. You will be charged according to the fees and charges in effect at the time of the change.

Your permit duration will remain the same.

Temporary change of vehicle

Provide copies of:

  • a completed change of vehicle details form, and
  • proof that you are using the temporary vehicle

In addition, you need to provide one of the following:

  • letter from a garage or insurance company stating your vehicle is in for repairs and the details about the courtesy vehicle
  • lease or hire agreement

You are allowed to use a borrowed vehicle providing it doesn’t have a permit. Send us a copy of the vehicle registration certificate (V5C) and a letter from the owner stating you are the only person using the vehicle. We will update your virtual permit with the registration number of the temporary replacement vehicle.

New number plate

To replace the number plate on your permit you need to submit:

  • a change in circumstances form
  • proof that you own or use the new number plate

In addition, you need to provide one of the following:

  • personalised vehicle registration (V750) covered with insurance
  • or a number plate authorisation certificate (V948) covered with insurance.

What happens next

Applications can take up to five working days to process. If you have applied online, you’ll receive an email confirmation of your submitted application.
