The Royal Coronation 2023

Tree cheers at Leighton House Museum

On Thursday 4 May, children from St Cuthbert with St Mathias CE Primary School in Kensington planted an oak tree in honour of the Coronation of Their Majesties The King and Queen. Ably supported by the Mayor for Kensington and Chelsea, Cllr David Lindsay and Lead Members, the schoolchildren planted the tree which is part of Kensington and Chelsea’s bee superhighways.

The schoolchildren were visiting Leighton House for the second time, as part of a partnership project with their school across all year groups. They learnt about bees and made bee hotels in the Leighton House Learning Centre, a new space in the museum that opened in October 2022. Learning activities and courses for groups and individuals of all ages can be hosted in the Centre, which champions engagement, hands-on experiences and practical workshops. The King visited the museum earlier this year to see the newly re-developed venue and new pieces commissioned through the Turquoise Mountain Foundation, a charity for whom the King was a founding patron.

The gardens at Leighton House are free to visit, and the planting will be commemorated with a plaque so visitors can spot it among the stunning Victorian-style landscaping.
