Interpretation: Leighton executed this work whilst in Broussa (now Bursa), Turkey, the first capital of the Ottoman Empire, on his way from Constantinople (now Istanbul) to Rhodes via Smyrna (Izmir).  The subject of this work is not a mosque but the Madrassa (school) of the Muradiye complex of buildings built on the outskirts of the town between 1426-28 by the Ottoman ruler Murat II.
