Image Details

Title: 'Pasture, Egypt'
Date: 1868
Media: Oil on Canvas
Dimensions: 11.2 x 36cm
Location: Leighton House Museum
Picture credit: The Bridgeman Art Library
Interpretation: Leighton believed in the value and importance of high areas of small ground in an otherwise monotonous landscape. This oil sketch brings this to mind.  There are three areas of higher ground in the background of the composition, and these, alongside the bands of horizontal colour under a blue-grey sky, make up the subtle elements in a composition dominated by a soft and vibrant brown.
