Accessible Home Hand-Back scheme

This scheme helps to:

  • move you from an accessible council or housing association home you no longer need to a home that better suits your needs

  • offer the home you vacate to a household that needs accessible accommodation

Benefits of the scheme

You may want to register for the scheme for several reasons, including to:

  • get a high priority for rehousing

  • resolve overcrowding

  • receive a financial incentive when moving from an accessible to a general needs home

  • move to a new home or location

  • live closer to work, family or friends

  • free up an accessible home for someone who needs it

Offers and incentives

If you live in an accessible home and want to move to a general needs home, you'll be entitled to:

  • high priority points for rehousing
  • cash incentives
  • advice and support
  • help with removals and costs
  • split tenancies (for eligible households)

Eligibility

You can apply if you're a tenant of a property with:

  • at least one bedroom, with no steps either inside or outside your home (studio flats are not accepted)

  • a ground floor or up to a fourth floor, if there is a lift

  • no one in the household who needs an accessible home

The need for accessible homes

Accessible homes are designed to meet the needs of people who have:

  • disabilities

  • mobility issues

  • other health requirements

There are far fewer accessible homes than people who need them. This is partly due to the national shortage of housing.

It also happens because some people live in accessible homes that do not have disabilities or mobility needs.

These homes could be better used by residents who rely on accessible features.
